Description
The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.
Following in the footsteps of Mendeleev, the Heavy Elements group explores the chemistry of superheavy elements – the newest and heaviest members of the periodic table. Through innovative single-atom experiments, state-of-the-art instrumentation, and international collaborations at leading accelerator facilities, we investigate atoms that exist for only fractions of a second and are studied one atom at a time, thereby revealing how physicochemical properties evolve at the limits of the periodic table.
For the Heavy Elements group of the Laboratory of Radiochemistry we are looking for a
PhD Student in Radiochemistry
Your tasks
- Develop new radiochemical methods and instrumentation for studies of superheavy elements
- Produce radioisotopes of the lighter homologs of superheavy elements using PSI's large-scale research infrastructure to test and optimize your ideas
- Perform innovative chemical experiments on superheavy elements at leading accelerator facilities worldwide as part of international collaborations
- Analyze and interpret experimental data to determine thermochemical properties of the heaviest elements
- Present your research at international conferences and publish your results in leading peer-reviewed scientific journals
Your profile
- Master's degree in Chemistry (preferably Physical Chemistry), applicants with a Master's degree in Physics are also encouraged to apply
- Highly motivated, curious, and eager to learn
- Strong interest in experimental research and the development of new methods and instrumentation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Team player with good written and spoken English skills
- Prior knowledge of radiochemistry is an advantage but not required
We offer
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal develop-ment possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture.
