Description
The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.
HTS4SRI (High-Temperature Superconductors for Sustainable Research Infrastructures) is a European project coordinated by PSI. The project aims to develop next-generation high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technologies that will significantly reduce the energy consumption and environmental footprint of large-scale research infrastructures. As part of this effort, PSI is developing advanced cryogenic power conversion technologies for HTS accelerator magnets in close collaboration with the Power Electronics and Drive Systems Laboratory (PEDS) at ETH Zürich, led by Prof. Dr. Jonas Huber. To strengthen this activity in our High field magnets for accelerators group, we are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated
Applied Physicist/Engineer
Your tasks
- Development of a cryogenic power supply unit for high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets
- Interdisciplinary conceptualization of the power supply integration with the magnet quench protection system
- Provide technical input for the integration of the power supply into the cryostat
- Work closely with interdisciplinary teams of the HTS4SRI project, at PSI and ETH Zürich
Your profile
- PhD degree in electrical engineering with focus on power electronics
- Experience in the optimization, design, realization, and characterization of power electronic converter systems
- Experience with high-current multiphase dc-dc converters, cryogenic systems and cryogenic (power) electronics or radiation-hardened electronics is a plus
- You are a communicative and team-oriented person who enjoys working in an interdisciplinary research environment
- Professional proficiency in English is required; knowledge of German is an asset
We offer
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture.
