A PhD student is sought from summer/autumn 2019 for a research project at the Chair of Earth Observation and Remote Sensing, Institute of Environmental Engineering, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - ETH Zurich on differential SAR interferometry for landslides monitoring
Open PhD Position in Earth Observation and Remote Sensing
The research focuses on investigating generic methods and algorithms in the context of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging and differential SAR interferometry. SAR interferometry-based measurements of ground displacements using time-series of spaceborne SAR data and, more recently, also using ground-based radar devices is an emerging technology that supports applications such as 1) monitoring of critical areas to better assess geohazards (e.g., in alpine areas), 2) measurement of subsidence (mm/cm scale over years) due to groundwater/oil/coal extraction, 3) monitoring of slopes in open pit mines, etc. By using repeat-pass SAR interferometry, deformation measurements at cm/mm level over longer time spans can be obtained for extended areas. SAR interferometry therefore complements quite well point-based measurement techniques such as observations with total station theodolites, or Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based, or leveling-based measurements of deformation.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate holding a master's degree or a diploma in electrical engineering, geomatics engineering, geophysics, physics or a related field with a background in digital signal processing and/or image processing. Some experience in SAR data processing or another field of array signal processing is an asset. The successful candidate has strong analytical skills and programming experience in Matlab, Python, C/C++, or equivalent, and is able and/or eager to develop and implement signal-processing algorithms in such a programming language. Fluency in English is required (oral and written), and it is essential that the candidate is willing to work in a multidisciplinary and international research team. Applicants should hold a valid driver's license (European Cat. B).

We are offering
a position in an attractive research environment within a young, highly motivated, and international research team.
We look forward to receiving your online application including 1) a cover letter that describes the candidate's motivation and research experience, 2) a full CV, 3) academic transcripts/list of courses completed or on-going, including grades, 4) a digital copy (PDF) of the master's thesis, and 5) name and address / contact details of two referees. Please address your application to Ms. Corina Niescher, Human Resources. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
